The BBU (Battery Backup Unit) is a CRU (Customer Replaceable Unit) in the VNX series of arrays. Included in the list are the VNX5200, VNX5400, VNX5600, and VNX5800 units that originally used CRU part numbers 078-000-132-00 and 078-000-092-07. For the latest replacement model, see 078-000-123-05, which ensures the newest battery cores and full compatibility.

Located on the back of the VNX2 array’s DPE, you’ll find the access panel for the BBUs. Each unit has orange release tabs that must be pressed inward for removal, as shown in the image below:

After removing the degraded BBU, insert the new unit with the white label facing up. Push it in until it locks securely into place. See the image below:

To replace a Battery Backup Unit (BBU) in an EMC VNX5200, VNX5400, VNX5600, or VNX5800, follow these steps:

  1. Identify the faulty BBU (A or B, listed in Unisphere).
  2. Remove the BBU from the base module.
  3. Press the orange release tab while holding the BBU’s handle.
  4. Place the removed BBU on a clean, static-free surface.
  5. Align the replacement BBU with the slot in the base assembly.
  6. Push the BBU into the slot until it clicks into place.

After installing the new BBU, check the System Health page and Unisphere to confirm the part is marked with an OK status.

Note: The 078-000-132-00 and 078-000-092-07 models are no longer manufactured new. To ensure compatibility and the latest battery cores, we supply the latest version in this series, 078-000-123-05.
